Buffalo and winds

Once again we are camped on a state line ... front wheels in Wyoming and rear wheels in Colorado.
For two days we have been parked in the campground of a guest ranch near Cheyenne, Wyoming.  It is a working ranch (since the 1800s) with 2800 acres of wind blown prairie and approximately 2500 head buffalo herd .... (of which 2000 head are being raised for meat sale).  The restaurant here serves the typical menu only everything is buffalo meat instead of beef cattle.
We took a tourist train ride out thru the buffalo herd .... fun!   They also keep a few other exotic animals around... yaks, camels, ostrich, and many, many prairie dogs.
They offer trail rides, etc. and it is a very beautiful place.  The wind really blows here!
Tomorrow on the Ft. Laramie to learn about the frontier wagon trails and such.

On the Road: downs and ups

Hello family and friends,

After about six weeks in the Houston/Galveston area, we are heading for "the Northwest".

Everyone had their round of medical visits:
Charlie's shoulder is almost back to normal.
I had a tooth extraction which, to the "extractee" (that's me) .... was a BIG deal.  But I know I'm really blessed with good health.
Vera is still having problems with her blood pressure and it greatly effects her energy level.  Her doctor continues to monitor and tweak her medications ..... they stay in touch by email.

We are in Colorado Springs spending two days enjoying the mountain air (c-o-o-o-l mountain air).
Two days ago we spent the night in Palo Duro Canyon, 1000 plus feet below the surrounding caprock plains, the next nite at 7,000 (plus)feet elevation at Raton Pass, and yesterday we went up Pike's Peak to 14,000 plus elevation.  Coming from Galveston at around ten feet elevation, we definitely feel the difference.  Our sleep number air mattress got firmer and we had to let some air out ... Vera says she's not used to this "rarified" air.

We saw the 'Texas' musical in Palo Duro Canyon .... it was magnificent!
And we found a really wonderful museum in Dalhart about the famous XIT ranch and about Texas ranching heritage.  To be in such an unexpected location, it is really a first class museum.

We stopped in Quanah, Texas to visit a cementery. Tried to find the grave of a friend; couldn't find it but had a wonderful adventure on the back country roads of dusty west Texas.

The Garden of the Gods is really something !  I'd like to spend some time just sitting, gazing there .... But alas, time to move on.

So far there have not been the tourist crowds we expected .... don't know if the wildfires are affecting tourism that much or what.  Our next major destination is Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area.

The dogs are getting back into the travel routine.  Bugsy is the one who watches out the window and does all the sniffing of each new place we slow down in; then he reports to the other dogs if they should pay attention or just keep napping.   They really rely on him!

Galveston, oh Galveston

Hello everyone,

We are still here in the Houston area ..... still doing Doctor's appointments and followups ..... I guess it must be the age we have reached (it just takes longer for the repairs and "tune ups").

Charlie had shoulder surgery and is getting 4 weeks of physical therapy here in Galveston.
Marilyn is having dental surgery next Friday.
Vera is trying to fine-tune her blood pressure fluctuations.
Toby had a cancerous cyst removed and is doing fine.
Other than that, yes, Mrs. Lincoln, we are enjoying the play.   Galveston is a great place to recuperate. We have a camping spot near the water, and are enjoying doing 'nothing'.

Our dogs were excited to get back to a place they know.  You can tell they recognize the scents of a lot of places.  They have done very well adjusting to having a home on wheels. We don't worry about them running off because they know that the house moves and they want to be IN it.
Also, they are adjusting to the sounds of campgrounds as being normal.  At first they barked at doors closing, people's voices outside, etc.; but now they are mostly adjusted I think.

I have the good fortune to be able to take additional watercolor lessons while I'm here in Galveston; what fun !  And, we went to the Seawall and bought our destination tee shirts from Galveston. Our friends here have noticed our new "vacation look" is brightly colored (as in neon colors) tee shirts and sandals.... it IS nice to be retired !  (I'm adjusting quite well).

Looks like we may not leave here until approx. June 18th (about 3 more weeks).
Our next destination is "The Northwest".  Details are not clear yet (we will only have about two and a half months before Vera's next cruise); but we wanted to go to Yellowstone and points in between, and be back in Albuquerque for the baloon festival in mid-October.

I'll keep you posted.

"Home"

Doesn't take long to feel right back 'at home' in Houston.  Wonderful friends have been missed greatly on the road !   Wish we could take a bunch of you along with us !

We start our scheduled medical appointments Monday, so we'll be here at least a week and a half, then go to Galveston for some time.

One thing I've noticed these two days we've been here:  the traffic moves a zillion times faster than anywhere else we've been.  People will flat run you over if you don't go fast (as in faster than the speed limits).  Then again, could it be that I've just fully embraced retirement and the slower paced life already .... or is it age? :(
Our favorite saying lately is "my memory is good - it's just short!"

Hello Houston

Nice spring weather you're having for us!
We just skirted by below the line of bad weather that swept across the southeast - horrible devastation!  The only thing we experience were some really terrific wind gusts on Wednesday; reduced my speed to about 50 (we are one BIG sail out on the open freeway).

Doesn't seem like it but we've been gone almost 5 months ... wow; time really does fly. This time last year I was thinking about retiring .... and now "I are one".   We are all really blessed !!!!

We are planning on being here (in Pearland) for a week or two, and then possibly in Galveston for a week. It all depends on Charlie's doctors appt. for a shoulder that may need surgery and physical therapy.

sand plows in biloxi

Spent the night in Baton Rouge .... will be in Houston later today.
We saw something along the coast in Gulf Port, Pass Christian, Biloxi areas that is totally opposite to my former life experiences:   they were SAND plowing. Actually they were plowing sand off the roadways into furrows and scooping it up into dumptrucks -- I suppose taking it back to the beaches.
Where I come from they use dumptrucks to scatter sand on the roadways in icy weather; or, use plows to get snow off the roadways !!!
This was a very wierd concept for me to accept.
Furthermore, a campground security guard told us they do it all the time --- every day !   Wow, what an investment in city/government manpower.   I suppose there's no other way to "handle" mother nature; and of course, they are protecting their tourist appeal/investment.
